MAC Football Game of the Week Preview – Fort Recovery at Anna

ftrecoveryatannaThis week, the Fort Recovery Indians are 2-0 heading into Midwest Athletic Conference play, and following their 54-0 blowout win over Waynesfield-Goshen they are only one of two unbeaten teams that remain in the Midwest Athletic Conference.  On Friday, they travel to Anna to face the 1-1 Rockets.  “It was definitely important for us to win our first two games, but more important I’m happy with the way we were able to battle some adversity and come back in our first game,” explained Indian head coach Brent Niekamp.  “We had some guys do a lot of growing up in that game which I think will serve us well in the future.  I thought our passing game improved from week one to week two and I also think we did a better job defending the pass.”

Last Friday, the Indians lit the scoreboard up for more than fifty points for the first time in four years as they piled up 355 yards of offense against the Tigers, while allowing a total of just 108 yards.  In the victory, Darien Sheffer and Kyle Schroer each scored a pair of touchdowns, while Kyle Timmerman rushed for more than 100 yards on 18 carries.  “Kyle Schroer has had a couple of good weeks receiving and he also had a nice kick return and interception return last Friday,” Niekamp praised.  “Seth Riegle has been pretty solid at linebacker on the defensive side of the ball.  This week we will have to be very disciplined both defensively and offensively.   Our quarterback (Darien Sheffer) has gained some valuable experience and will need to take another step forward, while our defensive line and linebackers know they have a major challenge this week .”

Following a 1-0 start to the 2013 season a couple of weeks ago, the Anna Rockets slipped to 1-1 last Friday with a 35-45 loss to the Brookville Blue Devils.  The Rockets trailed by 24 points when the teams headed to the locker room at halftime, but stormed back to score 21 points in the third quarter and trailed 31-21 as the fourth period got underway.  The two teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Anna fell by the ten-point margin.  Christiaan Williams scored four touchdowns for the Rockets in his teams’ loss.  In two games, Williams has run for nearly 500 yards and seven touchdowns while quarterback Josh Robinson has tossed the ball for 333 yards with a 59% completion rate.  Defensively, Wes Showalter leads the Rockets with 30 total tackles, two forced fumbles,
and two recovered fumbles.   “Brookville was as physical as any team we’ve played in a while – we came out flat and spotted them 24 points,” Anna head coach Bryan Rioch commented.  “To our kids credit though, we responded well in the second half.  We have the same challenge this week – our kids are stinging from the embarrassment of the loss and we will be motivated.”

While this series has been dominated by the Rockets in the past five seasons by an average margin-of-victory by over 35 points, both coaches understand that is in the past and Friday kicks off Midwest Athletic Conference play.  “We need to make Ft. Recovery one dimensional by stopping the run,” Rioch pointed out.  “We need to win first down and force them into passing situations.  Conversely, on
offense we need to establish the run, take care of the ball, and stretch the defense vertically and horizontally.  When you play in the MAC, records are irrelevant.  We need to be prepared to bring our A game.”

Niekamp added, “They have a good running game with Williams.  He is a big back who is a good runner and is a huge part of their offensive success.  Offensively, I think we need to be consistent – we’ve been able to make some good plays, but we have to continue to eliminate mistakes and keep the chains moving.”

MAC Football Preview Game of the Week – Coldwater at Bishop Hartley

coldwaterLast season, the Coldwater Cavalier football team ran the table en route to a perfect 15-0 season and the Division V state championship. With new faces up and down the field to begin the 2013 campaign, the Cavaliers opened this season with a 22-2 loss at home to the Kenton Wildcats last Friday evening. With little time to sulk, Chip Otten’s crew must head to Columbus this week for another matchup that looks difficult on paper – the Columbus Bishop Hartley Hawks. Despite their loss, Otten is pleased with several components of his team. “Our defensive line has been playing very well and their effort has been outstanding, while the offensive line has also been playing well and continuing to get better,” he remarked. “We need to be more consistent with offense and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves. We were in Kenton’s half of the field five to six times and inside the 25-yard line three times and we didn’t get any points – we need to make those plays when they present themselves.”

Coldwater struggled to get their offense running against Kenton, as they totaled a shade over 200 yards, 180 of which came through the air as quarterback Brody Hoying completed 17 of 32 passes. Adam Klosterman pulled in seven catches for 103 yards in the defeat. Defensively, the Orange and Black held Kenton scoreless in the first and fourth quarters, but the damage was done in the middle two periods when the Wildcats jumped ahead 16-2 at halftime and extended it to 22-2 at the conclusion of the third period. Coldwater was led on the defensive front by Mitch Fullenkamp who recorded three sacks, two half-sacks, and several quarterback hits throughout the contest. “The defense played well and hard against a veteran Kenton team,” commented Otten. “One thing that I am pleased with is that our attitude and effort has been really good since the loss.”

In week one, the Hawks opened the season with a 38-6 thumping over the Amanda Clearcreek Aces, and Otten expects his team to have their hands full when they head to Columbus. “Hartley is very physical up front with a veteran quarterback and speed to complement their power wing-T runs,” he explained. “They are very well-coached and unpredictable on special teams. We need to get last week out of our heads. It is always tough to lose, especially when it hasn’t happened for a while. I need to remind myself and the team that and just play forward. We need to learn from last week, work on those things, and get ready to play against Hartley.”

MAC Football Preview Game of the Week – Covington at St. Henry

stHenryThe Brad Luthman-era is set to officially get underway this week in St. Henry when the Redskins host the Covington Buccs at the Wally Post Athletic Complex on Friday night. Luthman, a Versailles graduate and former assistant at Marion Local, is excited to get the season underway with his new football family and points out some of the differences in his approach now that he is the head man. “I’ve learned a lot of things about myself in the process of assuming the head coaching position – there are certain situations where I act different now than when I was an assistant,” Luthman explained. “I’ve always been on-edge, ready-to-go kind of guy on Friday nights. I’ll be that way as a head coach too, but I’m sure that there will be some feelings, be it nerves or any other emotions, that will come into play this Friday night. I think that even the most seasoned head coaches will tell you that they are still a little nervous before every game, and I think that it is a good thing – it means you’re humble and respect your opponent and the game of high school football”.

The Buccs invade St. Henry for the first time since 1978 when the two programs engaged in a two-year, regular-season series. The Buccs took both games of the series in blowout fashion – 43-0 and 41-12 and they didn’t collide again for almost 20 years until they met in the 1996 Division VI playoffs when St. Henry downed the unbeaten Buccs 28-0 in the opening round of the post-season. Luthman realizes in order for his team to be successful on Friday, they will need to mature in a hurry against a solid, veteran Covington squad. “If we expect to succeed in our first game, we must change our pad level – the old saying holds true, ‘Low man wins,’ and Covington certainly gets off the ball low and hard on both the offensive and defensive lines,” Luthman commented. “We also need to pursue relentlessly and be great tacklers. AJ Ouellette is a standout running back for them who is a strong, tough runner and may be one of the best backs we see all season. To expect to win, we must be good tacklers at the point of attack and then rally as many red hats as possible to the play.”

The Redskins will try to advance to the Division VI playoffs for the second season in a row and a victory over Covington will go a long way in that goal for the young St. Henry team. “We need to start fast AND finish strong – values that all great programs relish,” Luthman advised. “We have been trying to work all off-season as a program that can be a solid second-half football team. We want to get to the second half with a chance to win and then believe that our work ethic will take us over the top as we play late into the fourth quarter.”

Football Friday Nights are finally upon us and Luthman is certainly geared up for the 2013 campaign. “I’m excited that football is back – I’m hard-pressed to admit to there being any better sport than high school football,” he commented. “Our team has worked hard, but there are still improvements to make, as there will be throughout the season. One of our core values as a program is to ‘Get better every day,’ and I think we have done that with the playing of each of our scrimmages. I hope that our improvement continues so that we are playing our best ball by the end of the season, but it all begins with Covington on Friday night”.
