MAC Football Game of the Week Preview – Parkway at Minster

football_150Week seven of the high school football season is approaching as the final standings in the Midwest Athletic Conference start to shake out and post-season aspirations begin to unfold across the league.  This week in Minster, the Wildcats are looking to move up the computer point ladder while maintaining their position a game back in the conference standings.  They will host the Parkway Panthers, a team looking to rebound from a loss to Versailles last week, while also overcoming the injury bug in hopes of finishing with their first winning season since 2007.  “Our focus is and will always be on strictly getting better – it’s cliche, but we really just try to control what we can control,” commented Wildcat head coach Geron Stokes.  “We have been getting better recently, but we are nowhere close to being as good as we want to be as a team or as a program.   From the top down, we have to continue to work like crazy to keep improving.”

Last week in Minster, the Wildcats squared off with the Anna Rockets and came from behind on two occasions to eventually pull out the 34-27 victory in conference play.  The win moved Minster to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in MAC action, a game behind front-runners Marion Local and Coldwater.  Junior Eli Wolf had a spectacular night against Anna, as he hauled in a school-record ten passes for another school record of 250 yards.  Both marks were previously-held by Greg Heitkamp, who in 1982 caught eight passes for 228 yards against Delphos St. John’s.  Sophomore quarterback Josh Nixon also had an outstanding showing on Friday after tossing for 366 yards and three touchdowns pushing him well over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.  “Minster has a lot of size and also have a couple of great playmakers in the Wolf brothers,” Parkway head coach Dan Cairns pointed out.  “For us to win, we will have to win the turnover battle, rush the ball effectively, and stop the big play. I don’t think you can stop the Wolf brothers, but we have to at least try to contain them.”

After picking up two straight MAC wins in weeks four and five, the Panthers traveled to H.B. Hole Field in Versailles last Friday and fell to the Tigers by a final of 38-14. It was a tight game heading into the final period at 24-14, but the Tigers pulled away in the waning minutes of the contest.  Ryan On returned a kickoff 91 yards for pay dirt in the first quarter, but unfortunately for Parkway the Tigers answered with ten straight points and they never looked back.  “One of the reasons for our inconsistency is key injuries – we lost two captains who were both two-way starters to season-ending injuries and then lost another captain and two-way starter during the second half last week,” Cairns remarked.  “We had a great pre-season, and it looked like we were going to be able to make some noise this year and compete with teams in the league, then the injuries came.  I still think we are capable of winning some more games, but it really depends on how our young guys step in and perform.”

Stokes is still preparing for the Panthers as he would any team on the schedule.  “We need to practice like our hair is on fire – our practice habits have consistently improved, but we have to make sure they continue to do so this week,” he commented.  “Parkway will be a challenge for us, which is just another reason to make sure we value practice this week.”

MAC Football Game of the Week Preview – Marion Local at Delphos St. John’s

MarionLocalatDSJ_GOTWYear in and year out, whether regular season or playoffs, the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays and Marion Local Flyers have engaged in the premier small-school Midwest Athletic Conference matchup over the past 15 years.  Thanks in part to a pair of outstanding veteran coaches and perennially outstanding teams, quite a few of their battles over the last decade-and-a-half have been classics.  This week, the unbeaten Flyers head to Stadium Park in Delphos on Saturday evening to square off with the 2-3 St. John’s Blue Jays.  A victory for the Flyers would tighten their grip on a share of the top spot in the MAC standings, while a Blue Jay win would help them build momentum and keep their hopes alive for a berth in the Division VII playoffs a few weeks from now.  “It seems like it is always a close game whenever we play them,” explained Marion Local head coach Tim Goodwin.  “Even years when the records would indicate that one team would have the advantage it doesn’t always go that way.  I think it is because we have played each other so many times over the years and just know each other very well.  We have also traditionally run a similar offense which adds to the familiarity.  It is a great rivalry based on mutual respect.”

Last week, the Flyers hosted Versailles at Booster Field and had little trouble dismantling the Tigers 28-0, powered by Jacy Goettemoeller’s three touchdowns and a relentless defense that has been suffocating in the first five weeks of the season.  Against Versailles, the Flyer defense held the Tigers to just four yards rushing.  “We have played good team defense to this point – last year we played a lot of sophomores on defense and gave up more yards and points than we are used to,” Goodwin pointed out.  “This year we are an experienced group and we have played like it. This week will be a different challenge with the option scheme that St. John’s runs.  We have not seen this style this year so we will have to play sound football in a way that we are not used to. We just need to keep refining our techniques to continue to improve.”

The Blue Jays started the season 0-2 before downing St. Henry in week three and falling to Coldwater the following Friday.  Last week, they got back on track with an exciting 34-27 victory over Anna, in which they scored the winning touchdown in the final seconds of the battle.  Running back Tyler Jettinghoff paced the Blue Jay attack with three touchdowns.   “Our players have continued to work hard – offensively it has been Luke MacLennan and Tyler Jettinghoff, while defensively Jason Witler and Cody Looser have been playing very well,” St. John’s Todd Schulte commented.  “I thought last week was close to a must win for us in regards to our mental state.  It is hard to keep working and not see the results you want, so that was big for us.”

While both teams enter this week’s fight with separate hopes pinned on the outcome, each coach understands the challenge their opponent brings.  “Their overall talent is pretty darn impressive,” praised Schulte.  “They seem to always be on the same page as an offensive or defensive unit, so we are going to have to have minimal mistakes and hopefully put their offense and defense in situations that they will make some mistakes.”  Goodwin concluded, “St. John’s is one of the few teams on our schedule who is committed to running the football, which is a totally different style and mindset when we play them.  Their running backs, Jettinghoff and MacLennon, are tremendous and their quarterback has really improved since the beginning of the year.  They have a big offensive line that comes off the ball well, so we will really have to be stout up front defensively in order to put ourselves in a position to come out on top.”

MAC Football Game of the Week Preview – Minster at Coldwater

MinsteratColdwaterWith the autumn chill in the air and the mid-season of the high school football regular season set to unfold this Friday, the Minster Wildcats will invade Coldwater this week in a battle that carries Midwest Athletic Conference title implications.  Since losing their first two games of the season, the Wildcats are 2-0 in conference play, while the Cavaliers have won three games in a row, two in the league, since dropping the season-opener to Kenton a month ago.  “Our practice demeanor has been much different over the past two weeks – we have started to practice like a football team,” commented first-year Wildcat head coach Geron Stokes.  “Our sense of urgency was forced to be elevated, and our seniors have done a much better job these last two weeks of not accepting mediocre effort and their focus has been outstanding.”

Coldwater head coach, Chip Otten, is equally as excited about his squad over the past few weeks.  “Our defense has been outstanding,” he praised.  “The varsity defense hasn’t given up a point since the first half of the Columbus Hartley game in week two.  Communication has been solid, we have not given up big plays, and we are running to the ball and making big stops.”

Last week, the Wildcats hosted the winless St. Henry Redskins and, despite facing numerous situations buried deep in their own territory, their defense rose to the occasion time and time again in the 7-0 victory.  “Our entire defense was big against St. Henry – we set the edge, leveraged the ball, and made big plays when we were backed up the entire first half,” Stokes pointed out.  “They were put in a ton of bad situations with sudden changes and short field position, and they continued to dig their cleats in the ground and get the stops.  I am very proud of what they did as a unit.”

While Minster was grinding out their win over the Redskins, Coldwater traveled to Delphos and despite poor weather conditions, had little trouble finding the end zone and making big stops on the defensive side of the ball in a 41-6 blowout over the St. John’s Blue Jays.  “Brody Hoying and Mitch Schoenherr played outstanding on both sides of the ball last week, as they have continued to do all season,” Otten explained.  “Our running game has really improved as the offensive and defensive lines are using their quickness advantage to help us play well up front.”

With a 3-1 record and number-two ranking in this week’s Division V Associated Press poll, the Cavaliers are quickly establishing themselves as not only the team to beat in the conference, but also have their sights set on a fifth straight trip to the state final in the coming months.  “They (Coldwater) are unbelievable to watch on tape – they play the game the way it is supposed to be played,” Stokes remarked.  “They play really hard, are extremely physical, and execute like crazy.  Their coaching staff does an incredible job and it is obvious by watching them on film.  We’ve got a huge challenge this week, but that’s what we want!  We will either execute how we should and it will be a dog fight, or we won’t execute and we’ll get beat.”

Minster will present many challenges this week that Otten feels will need to be addressed early in the battle.  “Their overall size and physical play up front is the first thing I notice.  Their size against our schemes and quickness will be interesting matchup and certainly a key to outcome of the game.  Right now the confidence of our inexperienced and younger players is getting better.   Because of the way we have played the last three weeks, our kids feel like they can compete with anyone on the schedule.”

MAC Football Game of the Week Preview – Marion Local at Fort Recovery

MarionLocalatFortRecoveryOn Friday, we welcome week two of Midwest Athletic Conference football action and the game of the week that pits the Marion Local Flyers and Fort Recovery Indians tangling at Barrenbrugge Park in Fort Recovery.  The Flyers land in town with an unblemished record both overall and in the Midwest Athletic Conference at 3-0 and 1-0 respectively, while the Indians suffered their first loss of the season last week against Anna to fall to 0-1 in the conference and 2-1 overall.

In their 42-13 victory over Parkway last Friday, the Flyers were clicking on all cylinders as they pounded the Panthers for 14 points in each of the first two periods and followed up with seven in each the third and fourth quarters.  The Flyers piled up more than 200 yards on the ground and 160 through the air with Jacy Goettemoeller hitting the century mark for the first time this season with 112 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  Adam Bertke collected 150 yards throwing the ball on 13 completions and also threw for a pair of scores.  Troy Homan was Bertke’s top target with more than 100 yards receiving, while Dustin Rethman picked off two Parkway passes to lead the Flyer defense.  “The strength of our defense is the fact that we put 11 guys on the field who can run,” Flyer head coach Tim Goodwin pointed out.  “We have pursued to the ball well to this point, while our secondary and defensive line are pretty much intact from last year, and they have played like we expected.”

Things looked promising early on for the Indians as they charged ahead 7-3 midway through the second quarter last week against Anna, but two quick scores by the Rockets before the halftime break spelled doom, as the Indians fell in their conference opener 31-7.  The Indians were out-gained 351-181 yards in the defeat and were led by Darien Sheffer’s 149 yards through the air.  “Our defensive front played well – we held their main running back to his lowest rushing yardage of the season,” remarked Niekamp.  “Seth Riegle had 15 tackles, but our front four – Reece Grieshop, Kyle Timmerman, Jacob Muhlenkamp, and Trent Dues – did a really did a good job of clogging things up inside.  Offensively, Darien Sheffer has continued to improve – he had a great first half against Anna, and  I think he showed us and himself that he can make plays against a very tough opponent.  The key now is developing more consistency.”

For the Flyers to move to 4-0 on the season, Goodwin pointed out that his team needs to cut down on turnovers (three last week), and contend with Fort Recovery’s stingy defense.  “Fort Recovery’s strong point right now is their defense – they are sound, well-coached, and play hard,” he explained.  “Their offense is very young, but they have to be excited about their future. We just need to continue to work to improve upon the things that we are focused on this week.”

Both teams understand the importance of Friday’s early-season battle, particularly Fort Recovery as they go against what could likely be their stiffest test of the season.  “We need to prepare for them the same way as anyone else – we look at their best players and what they try to do with those guys defensively and offensively,” Niekamp commented.  “Obviously, they have some very good players in Bertke and Goettemoeller to name a few, but what makes Marion so good is how hard they play.  They are very fundamentally sound and they play very hard.  We need to be ready to play with a very high level of intensity on Friday.”
