MAC Girls Basketball Game of the Week: Minster at Coldwater

girls_basketball_150The tournament draw has been finalized and the league champion will be crowned this week as all that remains of the 2013-14 regular season are a few tune-up games before the post-season begins in two weeks.  This Thursday in Coldwater, the Coldwater Cavaliers will tangle with the Minster Wildcats in what should unfold into a pretty decent battle.  The Cavaliers currently sit 11-6 overall and at 5-2 in the MAC, and are two games behind the front-running Versailles Tigers.  The Wildcats, on the other hand, are 15-2 overall and a game behind the Tigers, still clinging to the hope of a loss by Versailles that will allow them to share the league trophy this season.  “We are still taking it one game at a time – we’re not good enough to overlook any opponent on our schedule!” Minster head coach Nann Stechschulte commented.  “Coldwater has a combination of solid guard play and size inside. They have become up-tempo and like to play end line to end line.  Any league game on the road is tough and we expect a great game Thursday.”

Coldwater head coach Nick Fisher has weathered a few ups and downs this season and is coming off of a disappointing week last week in which his girls fell to Versailles on Thursday and Van Wert on Saturday.  He is hoping a win over Minster will give his squad the jolt they need heading into their sectional-opener against Columbus Grove on February 19 in Elida.  “We are continuing to work on our execution – we need to execute better offensively and take advantage of every possession,” Fisher pointed out.  “We had too many missed opportunities against both Versailles and Van Wert. We discussed those and have been working on them for a few weeks now.  We executed a little better against a very good Van Wert team, which to me is promising.”

The Cavaliers have been led offensively and defensively in their past few games by Sarah Kanney, Joelle Hemmelgarn and Denise Schwieterman, but Fisher also pointed out a few others who have been stepping up their games.  “Lauren Leugers is really starting to come on as the season progresses, and both Bridget Dues and Erica Sudhoff had good weeks of practice recently. Brooke Welsch has also started practicing again after having surgery on her leg, so that too has been a plus. Like I said, we just need to keep working hard on defense and get better execution on offense overall.”

The Wildcats host Coldwater after just completing an unbeaten schedule in January with a deep lineup that doesn’t boast any girls averaging double-digits.  On Saturday, in her teams’ victory over the Russia Raiders, senior guard Claire Fischer unloaded a school-record six three-pointers, leading a Minster attack of nine long balls, which also shattered the all-time school record.  “We truly have no one averaging over 7.5 points per game, so there have been no standouts over the course of the season, although we did set those two new records on Saturday,” Stechschulte remarked.  “We need to continue focusing on defense, rebounding, shooting, and ball handling.  This far into the season we are still doing fundamental breakdown drills in practice just like we did since day one, and that is important to stay successful for the remainder of the season.”

Fisher understands Minster’s offensive diversity and tenacious defense will present plenty of challenges on Thursday night.  “Minster is always a tough game, and this year is no different – Nann does an outstanding job with her girls and by this point in the season they are always playing well,” he commented.  “I have been impressed with Kayla Richard and Claire Fischer at the guard spots, while Logan Arnold is also having a very solid this season. Hopefully we can execute and continue to play hard to finish out the season as well as get ready for the tournament.”

MAC Girls Basketball Game of the Week – Delphos St. John’s at Marion Local

girls_basketball_150As they sit at 3-3 in Midwest Athletic Conference play and 5-11 overall, the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays are looking for a shot of momentum in the next couple weeks as the Division IV tournament looms.  The Blue Jays slipped in league action to Coldwater two weeks ago, but they got things going in the right direction last Thursday with a victory over the St. Henry Redskins.  This Thursday, Dan Grothause’s girls travel to Maria Stein to square off against Treva Fortkamp’s Marion Local Flyers.  “We have been struggling all season long to be more consistent on both ends of the floor, and we did get big efforts from Madilynn Schulte (16 points), Rachel Pohlman (7 points), and Sydney Fischbach (12 rebounds) in a big win versus St Henry last week,” Grothause explained.  “Obviously a win this week at Marion would mean a lot at any point in the season, but it is always great if you can get quality wins heading towards the tournament to help continue to build your teams’ confidence.”

The Blue Jays have been paced this season by sophomore Sydney Fischbach at 7.4 points-per-game and she is also the leading rebounder with seven each time she takes the floor, enjoying four games this season in which she walked off the court with a double-double.  Grothause has also been receiving solid production from freshman Jessica Geise, who hits six points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. The Blue Jays also have four other girls who average four points per game or better in the 2013-14 campaign.

On the other side of the floor, 12th-ranked Marion Local has slipped in three of their last four Midwest Athletic Conference games to move to 3-3 in league play and 13-3 overall.  Brooke Winnner leads the area in scoring at more than 15 points-per-game and also pulls down five rebounds per game, just below teammate Emily Mescher who is one of the best in the area at 6.1 rebounds per contest.  Grothause understands the challenge that his troops face in Mercer County on Thursday evening.  “They are well-coached, tough kids, who play especially aggressive on the defensive end and don’t allow you to get comfortable in your offense,” he pointed out.  “In order to come away with a win, we have to limit our mistakes and don’t give them any easy baskets off turnovers. We need to make them work offensively and limit them to one shot by controlling the boards.  Marion Local is so tough at home – it will take a big TEAM effort to get a win at the Hanger.”

MAC Girls Basketball Game of the Week – Fort Recovery at Versailles

girls_basketball_150As the mid-season in the 2013-14 girls’ basketball season is upon us, the Versailles Tigers are at the top of the mountain in the league standings as they currently sit 11-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.  They are looking to stay sharp this week as there are three teams breathing down their backs with one loss apiece in MAC play.  This week the Tigers host the Fort Recovery Indians, who are 6-4 overall and winless in league action.

Since their loss to Lima Bath a few weeks ago, the Tigers have rattled off five straight wins including their two most recent victories over Mechanicsburg and St. Henry.  Versailles have been paced offensively by a host of girls who have shared scoring responsibilities game in and game out, but Christa Puthoff has been the main scoring threat with nearly 12 points per game.  Stonebraker pointed out Brooke Pothast, Olivia Schlater, and Taylor Winner as her stalwarts on the defensive side of the ball.  “I think we need to be a little more consistent on the offensive side,” she explained.  “We tend to play two or three quarters with a sense of urgency to score and need to stop taking a quarter off.  I feel our rebounding has improved throughout the year and I hope it continues to get better.”

The Fort Recovery Indians enter Thursday’s game on the heels of a four-point loss to Parkway and an eight-point setback to Van Wert in their previous two outings.  The Indians are spear-headed offensively by Tori Lennartz, who leads the area in scoring at more than 16 points per game, while also connecting on more than 35% of her shots from behind the three-point arc.  She is also one of the tops in the area in rebounds and assists per game at seven and four respectively each time she hits the court.  Stonebraker understands the Indians are still without a win in their three conference games, but is quick to acknowledge that her girls cannot take them lightly.  “Every league game we play in at this point is important, so Fort Recovery is our concern this week,” she emphasized.  “They know how to win game and what concerns me the most is their unpredictability.  They can go on offensive runs at any point during a game, so we must contain them.  They are also very intense on defense by moving very well and really playing in their opponents face, so we will need to contend with that in order to come away with a victory this week.”
